I got some hilarious emails & comments from readers and friends about my Friday’s post that prompted me to take some snap shots from a different perspective.
It is easy to zoom in, filter out the noise, and see beauty in everyday objects around you. Zoom out, however, and I live in the heart of the Chaos Theory.
Let’s start with my desk, which looks like this every day. I have an organizational rhythm beneath the exterior mayhem which Dalai Dan cannot appreciate. This desk is possibly our biggest threat to our marriage, second only to his milk expiration date phobia.
My bathroom is not much better. If I know I’m going to use all of this stuff the next day, why bother?
Let move onto the animals, who try their very best to add a unique imprint on our home. Remember my favorite chair? It is right next to this mess created the same day by our bladder-challenged dog.
Moving onto our cat, who poops no less than 12 times a day. And every time she does, she digs a whole big enough to conceal a dead body, enthusiastically flinging her litter all over the floor.
Notice the towel under her litter box? It is there because she constantly underestimated the size of her butt. I can’t tell you how many times I have watched Mia squat her bum over the edge and pee all over the floor.
There is the dirty girl…
Our children are no better than the animals. Their destructive force is immeasurable. I have commiserated about it with you here.
Dalai Daniel’s lego obsession has not been thwarted. His lego men, heads, arms, and pieces are still all over the house. And in the vacuum cleaner bag. I bet there are 3 dozen severed lego hands in there.
This is a light day for the air hockey table. Only home to 3 coats, 2 pairs of socks, 1 plate with cemented quesadilla cheese, 2 granola bar wrappers, 1 backpack, 1 guitar, 1 tennis racquet, and 27 school worksheets.
I have my limits. I refuse to show you what I found INSIDE the toilet, which could be anywhere from 8 hours to 3 days old. We are still working on flushing in the Dalai household.
All-in-all, an accurate reflection of a typical Sunday mess.
I hope this makes you feel better about your stained carpet, overstuffed drawers, and out-of-control clutter. You are in good company π
I’m off to clean! Have a fantastic, clean day!
looks like a family lives there…
Yep, we are living big things here!
I went nuts yesterday and threw half of Harrison’s “clutter” from his room in the trash!! It felt so good. I told him it was time to part from the plastics cr^&^P that he won in the in some sort of toy grab, toy machine from 2007!!! It was amazing that his drawers could actually close now.
We still have bum ball machine football helmets that T refuses to let me toss. Such junk! Good for you that you got it cleaned all out.
Hilarious! You had me a little anxious about our own household clutter last week, when I saw your beautiful (isolated) photos. I have some things I hold precious and dear, but let’s just saw that the House Beautiful folks are not knocking on my door. Life is what it is, and this morning I realized that in 18 months I will be an empty nester. Maybe then I’ll get around to painting the entry hall and stairway, and “fixing” all those other places that someone has knocked laundry baskets or ski gear or duffle bags against the wood trim. (I can commiserate about the hockey puck evidence; we likewise discovered the evidence of our son’s improved golf swing (ceilings) in several rooms where he positioned himself in front of mirrors, and the worn spot on the antique Chinese carpet. Very consistent, that golf swing.
Oh no! So you literally have a bare spot on the carpet from his golf club? That is a hoot! Adds to the rug’s charm, I’m sure. I am envious that you get to pain in 18 months. I have to wait another 12 years. What is the point now? They would ruin it in a month!
What a great post, LOVED it! Thank you for sharing your chaos with us.
Thank you π Glad my mess can brighten someones day!
I feel better, now! And sadly, we are still working on that flushing part here, too.
How hard can it be, Jeanne? I keep telling them they will never find a wife if they don’t start putting up the seat and flushing. Common curtesy!
Trust me I have my little dirty secrets too. Bathtubs with curtains, stoves, and closets make a great place to shove stuff last minute.
That is my husbands way to dealing with it: just hide it in a drawer. He can’t stand that I am ok with letting it all hang out! Drives him nuts.
Oh my! I CANNOT tell you what today’s post means to me today! I was having a particularly cluttered, can’t-find-a-thing, losing my mind, have no sense of organization kind of week last week and due to my own lame insecurity, your Friday post only made me feel worse! Then, to see the “full picture” today on your post just made me want to hug you!! It’s a reminder for all of us not to judge a book by it’s cover (good or bad) and to stop comparing ourselves to others!! Thank you, once again, for your sweet honesty and openess! Have a great week!
You are so cute! I could just hug you! We all have our warts, don’t we? I makes me chuckle to think that you all thought for a second that I had my $h%t together…Lordy, I try! But, sadly, organization is not my strength. (BTW, my desk and bathroom are still messy. Poor Dalai Dan)
One of the best blog posts I’ve seen in a LONG time from blogs I check in on often…refreshing and honest π Love it!
Thank you! I am definitely not shy, much to the dismay of Dalai Dan π
Lina- This was a laugh out loud read! Yes- it was so stinkin funny, but mainly because I relate all too well….did you get these pictures from our house?
YES! Of course! I didn’t need to search for messy home photos, got plenty right here π
Haha so funny – my desk is exactly the same, I have a spot for everything DONT TOUCH IT! My husbands side of the desk is always clean but he doesn’t work from home and raise 3 kids, pay the bills, cook etc.
He also has a milk-going-off phobia, he has to smell it before he uses it every time π haha
Sound like they would be fast friends! My husband’s closet is in color order…does that sound familiar too?
Wellness Warrior website one of my favorites – fresh, clean, easy to navigate. Did you work on it? If so, nicely done!
